yellow butterflies on brown ground

No doubt you’re wondering, “Why Yellow Butterfly?” The truth is a bit of a silly story. Then again, maybe it’s not so silly after all. It started when I was eight-years-old. Keep in mind, I don’t actually have many solid memories from my childhood, but this one has always stood out in perfect clarity.

My third-grade class was being led down the grassy hill behind our elementary school to the blacktop court for PE. I remember looking around at my classmates in our awful navy uniforms (yes, we had uniforms; no, it wasn’t a private school) marching down the hill in a collection of scraggly lines. It was a beautiful day, though I couldn’t tell you if it was spring or fall, just that it wasn’t 100°… yet. I even recall wondering if our physical education teacher—who was already a riot of freckles—somehow had even more today.

I was wondering if we would be “running” the mile today, which I swear we did practically every other week. Then I spied this tiny yellow butterfly drifting on the breeze, and I knew it would be a good day. Not a hopeful fancy, but a belief that sprung from my core: “If you see a yellow butterfly, it means you’ll have a good day.” Here’s the wild part. I couldn’t recall where I’d heard that or why I believed it so absolutely, just that I did. Joy filled my little eight-year-old heart, and as far as I recall, it was in fact a good day.

I have held fast to that belief for almost two decades now. I still believe it just as firmly now as I did then. So much so, that those closest to me—family, spouse, friends—have also begun pointing out when they see a yellow butterfly. Now, I’m not talking about Monarchs on the yellow side or even the ever-stunning Swallowtail. I’m talking about those teeny yellow butterflies that never get bigger than a half-dollar (and that’s being very generous). They rarely have extra markings beyond white spots and, as a whole, are largely unremarkable. Except of course, if you see one, in which case you’re bound to have a good day.

When I decided to leverage my experience and knowledge as an indie author to launch an editing and design business, I wanted to bring that same joy, that same optimism, with me. Naming my business Yellow Butterfly is my way of sharing those positive vibes with my clients. So fill out the request form and give this Yellow Butterfly a chance to brighten your day.
